We only use appearance grade rough cut red western 2x4's for each project as the main support beams between our galvanized steel posts. For our pickets and 1x4's we use clear grade (no knots) kiln dried cedar that elevates the visual appeal of any fence and makes it more resilient to problems like boards splitting and warping that is more commonly in boards with knots.

We know for a fact that you will never have any issues with your posts as they are made from long lasting galvanized steel and won't present the same issues that typical wood or concreted posts will. If you choose a wood fence it should last anywhere from 20-30 years and potentially longer, if a fresh coat of oiled based sealant is applied every couple of years. Vinyl and ornamental should last anywhere from 30-40 years before needing to be replaced.

If a company expects you to do either one, this means you would be responsible if your fence is not built up to code or a utility is hit that is marked.
