How Long Does A Wooden / Cedar Fence Last?

Typical Lifespan of a Cedar Fence
On average, a well-built cedar fence can last 15 to 30 years.
With keeping up with the maintenance and care of the fence, it could last up to ~40 years
Without maintenance, or in harsher conditions, lifespan tends to be on the lower end.
Why Cedar Can Last So Long
Natural resistance: Cedar has natural oils that help repel insects and resist decay.
Dimensional stability: It doesn’t warp or shrink as much as some other woods.
Quality installation matters: If posts are set properly, for example good drainage and deep enough, the fence will last longer.
Maintenance: Regular cleaning, and reapplying a sealant or stain (every few years) helps a lot.
Things That Shorten Cedar's Life
Constant exposure to moisture (wet soil, poor drainage) can lead to rot (and post rot if using the concrete installation method).
Harsh sun/UV can dry it out or fade it faster if not protected.
Lack of maintenance: if it’s never sealed or stained, it will deteriorate faster.
Poor installation: wood-to-soil contact, bad post-setting, poor airflow.
Bottom Line
If you're using cedar for your fence and you take decent care of it, you can reasonably expect 20-30 years of service. With extra care and ideal conditions, 40+ years is possible but less likely without that maintenance.
