When planning a new fence, most homeowners focus on style and height, but the materials used, especially the posts, play a major role in how long that fence will last. One of the most common questions we hear is whether pressure-treated wood or natural wood like cedar is the better choice. More recently, many homeowners are also asking about steel driven fence posts.


Each option serves a different purpose in fence construction, and understanding how they work together can help you build a fence that looks great and performs well for years.


Pressure-Treated Wood Posts

Pressure-treated wood has long been the standard choice for fence posts and structural components. It is designed specifically for ground contact and treated to resist rot, decay, and insects. This makes it a reliable option in wet soil and climates with frequent freeze-thaw cycles. Pressure-treated posts are also generally more affordable than cedar posts, which is why they are commonly used for structural support. Since fence posts are often the first part of a fence to fail, using pressure-treated wood has traditionally helped extend the overall life of the fence.

That said, pressure-treated wood is not without drawbacks. When new, it often has a greenish tint and can take time to dry. As it dries, it may warp or twist, which can affect long-term alignment. It also needs to dry thoroughly before staining or sealing, which can delay finishing the fence. While pressure-treated wood is strong and durable, it is not always the best option for visible areas of the fence.


Cedar Posts

Cedar is typically used for fence pickets, rails, and decorative features. Cedar is naturally resistant to insects and decay and does not rely on chemical preservatives. Homeowners often choose cedar for its clean, uniform appearance and its ability to accept stain evenly. It also tends to stay straighter than pressure-treated lumber and holds fasteners well, making it an excellent choice for privacy fences where appearance matters.

However, cedar is not ideal for direct ground contact and usually comes with a higher upfront cost. To reach its full lifespan, cedar should be stained or sealed and maintained over time. For these reasons, cedar is best used above ground rather than as a structural post.


Steel Driven Posts

Steel driven fence posts are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to traditional wood posts. Instead of being set in concrete, steel posts are driven directly into the ground, which allows them to displace soil rather than remove it. This provides excellent stability, especially in climates with freeze-thaw conditions. Steel posts do not rot, crack, or twist, and because they are driven, they are immediately load-bearing with no curing time required.

Another major advantage of steel posts is long-term consistency. They stay straight for the life of the fence, helping prevent common issues like leaning posts, sagging sections, and gate problems. When paired with cedar or wood fence boards, steel posts are typically hidden from view, allowing homeowners to enjoy the look of a traditional wood fence with the strength of steel underneath.

Choosing between pressure-treated wood, Cedar wood, and steel posts ultimately depends on your budget, your design goals, and how long you expect your fence to last.
